He received his undergraduate education in Computer Engineering from Princeton University in the USA. He continued with his master’s degree at Washington University and completed his PhD in 2002. He subsequently became Associate Professor of Computer Science at Cornell University. Known for his contributions to peer-to-peer, operating systems and computer networks, Sirer is the founder and CEO of Ava Labs. He is best known for his focus on operating systems, distributed systems, and cryptocurrency research.

In 2003, Sirer designed the first cryptocurrency based on Karma, a proof-of-work protocol, six years before Bitcoin. He is also recognized for his research on selfish mining, characterizing the scale and centralization of existing cryptocurrencies and proposing leading protocols for on-chain and off-chain scaling. He was an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Cornell University for 14 years. He was also co-director of the Cryptocurrencies and Smart Contracts Initiative at the university. He also acts as the representative and promoter of the Avalanche infrastructure, the implementer of a consensus mechanism introduced to the world by the mysterious Team Rocket. The Avalanche Project first emerged during research conducted at Cornell University by Emin Gün Sirer with the support of Maofan Yin and Kevin Sekniqi.

As a result of the research, Ava Labs technology company was established to develop an alternative blockchain technology for the financial sector. The Avalanche network, developed in 2020, offers a scalable and also secure structure. Avalanche enables permissioned or non-permitted blockchains to run on a single network. The difference between a classic blockchain and Avalanche is that it does not act on a single chain.

The official cryptocurrency of the Avalanche network is AVAX. AVAX is used to secure the Avalanche blockchain and pay network-wide transaction fees. Avalanche is defined as a new decentralized infrastructure that Emin Gün Sirer is trying to introduce to the world. Known by many for his contributions to operating systems and computer networks, Sirer’s recognition was mostly after AVAX Coin. He has also received awards from different foundations and societies.
